Japan Benefit EP

"March 2011, Japan was hit with a devastating earthquake and tsunami which left people in a great need of food, shelter, just about everything you can imagine. In addition the event created an ongoing dangerous nuclear problem. As I watched the horrorfying waves wash off entire towns, I felt completely helpless. So I turned to the one thing I knew I could do: writing a song and releasing a benefit EP. All proceeds coming off of "Japan" EP (including ringtones, seperate singles and any additional products that may be added) will be donated to the Red Cross to help the Japanese in this time of crisis. They need our help. So please, look into your heart and help me help them by purchasing a product. Thank you." — Press Release for Japan Benefit EP

JAPAN BENEFIT EP was released on March 31, 2011. Additional single "Japan (Alternate Stadium Edit)" was released on April 1, 2011.

To buy the EP, go to either of the following stores:

http://www.reverbnation.com/store/index/artist_1404110

Thank you to each and every one who buys the EP, or a song from it, or the alternate version of "Japan", or a ringtone. Every purchase counts in helping the Japanese, so take part in my mission. Also, I would appreciate it very much if you could spread the word through by posting a link to your FB pages, Twitter, or any other media. The more people hear about the EP, the more good we can do. Thank you!

Happy New Year 2011!

The year 2010 was a good year, despite of the fact that I lost some very dear close ones. The year was full of inspiration and music poured out of me both in the form of numerous original songs, as well as classical compositions. Thank you God and Happy New Year 2011 to each and everyone of you! Blessed be!

*I apologise for not updating this blog very much. I have been busy, starting one project after finishinjavascript:void(0)g another. I hope in 2011 I will have more time to devote into writing to this blog.

Shackles and Arrows

I would say this song is slightly inspired by the dark and twisted movie by Lars von Trier ("Antichrist"). I have to admit, I didn't like the movie very much, though at the same time wasn't expecting to. Disturbing and a bit too dark for my taste. At times the cinematography was very beautiful and captivating and this is where the inspiration for this song came about.

The movie also inspired a second piece of poetry called "Paradox" which I will later use in a different song, so would not say I "tormented" myself for nothing. Even so, if you decide to watch the movie, brace yourself because it invades you in more ways than one - not to mention being sexually provocative and even pornographic at times.
The idea of a love affair, eden gone wrong - that is where "Shackles and Arrows" was born.

About You Tube and You Tubers

No user of You Tube can claim they have never encountered hostility or some sort of abuse in You Tube community. There are plenty of advantages and possibilities to promote ones talents, create friendships, groups, collaborations, exchange opinions, help each other, open up constructive discussions on various topics but there is also the other side which is at least just as strong: the belittling and ridiculing, the threats on ones life, the inexplainable hatred and perhaps the biggest problem of them all: lack of understanding or will to understand or agree to disagree which leads to openly hostile and abusive atmosphere. And that kind of atmosphere leads to nothing - but it will go on just as long as you are willing to take part in it.

Some people feed off of the chaos they manage to create. They are in it just for that. So what to do in such a situation? Perhaps ignoring would be the course of action, forgetting you ever got a reply to a comment you made or to a video you posted. But sometimes it's too overwhelming to keep your "mouth shut". Sometimes you feel compelled to reason a little - mostly to def ears I'm afraid. But that what's you do when you feel misunderstood. In the end, people see what they want to see and believe what they want to believe. Sometimes I read comments around You Tube and I can't help but think: what is the point of all the hatred? Such hostility - it oozes from the screen a mile away. And where does it get anyone? What do these bullies get out of being mean to other people?

I must say I have had my share of negativity as well. In terms of being a starting songwriter, posting things online as I have created them even if the songs have not been very skillfully produced due to not knowing better, YouTube has been both a blessing and a curse. I have certainly grown myself a thicker skin. You can't please everyone and everyone can't please you. So why bother taking it too personally, when most of the bullying comments come from faceless nameless uncreative people - if you are so keen on sharing your distasteful opinions on someones creativity, then a) do it better yourself and b) if you are going to shoot someone down, have the dignity of doing it without hiding behind anonymity. But that is the easy thing about cyber bullying isn't it? You can unload your own frustrations on strangers without the fear of being exposed for the ugly unhappy person you really are.

One other huge thing in You Tube is the ongoing rivalry between fans of different artists. Their perspectives are twisted because they can only see things through the eyes of their idol (sometimes not even through their idol's eyes). Fans seem to abandon critical thinking due to treating their heroes/heroines as gods and goddesses, something unearthly. Still, showbusiness is mostly illusion and publicists are there to make it all okay in desperate situations: meaning that what comes out of a publicists mouth isn't nearly always true, it's mostly damage control. But many fans do not think about it, they want to keep the illusion going and therefore they keep on repeating the "truths" they've heard rather than considering what the truth really is.

What worries me the most is how You Tube can actually work as a tool to bad things. People lying about their identity, lurking in and creating relationships, sending suggestions which may lead to inproper behavior, death threats - or just getting kicks from a simple verbal abuse on a daily basis. It's enough dreadful when it happens between two adults but I find it especially troubling if I hear or see such things being targeted on children/youngsters and the gay community.

Is it really great to beat someone up verbally? Sometimes, when they truly deserve it, perhaps. But how many times do people really deserve it? How many times the one you are reacting to even cares or recognizes any of the things you try to explain to them. Most people are blind and want to remain that way because it allows them to keep doing what they are doing and prevents them from facing themselves and their own issues - the reasons behind their behavior. A person who is happy with themself and their life and respects other people, does not beat people up on a daily basis and go wishing people to hell - or shower them with more explicit, personal and insulting outbursts like "I wish you had died at child birth".

As lashing out in web communities such as You Tube, this blog entry too is a release of sorts. I want people to think before they act. You Tube should be about enjoying videos, not about attacking other people for a reason or without a reason. I also want to encourage parents (and grown ups in general) to pay attention to what their kids do in the web and with whom they interact - not because I think kids are the ones acting in abusing ways (the majority of bad behavior comes from adults) but simply to avoid them getting into trouble or getting sucked into the games of someone who may want to abuse them one way or another. It's a wicked world in the web. Don't get burned by it - keep your eyes open and do your part in toning down the unnecessary hostility.

The Last Day

This week I catched a film called "2012". I'm talking about a documentary which deals with Nostradamus' long lost manuscript about the end days, not the movie by the same name. After viewing this documentary, I would be lying if I said I felt fine. The next day I woke up with rather deep anxiety inside me. It's not exactly thrilling news that I and my loved ones might have to live through such historic events.

I don't believe the end of the world comes in 2012. But I do think it's a significant year and the world is changing rapidly. We are living a significant time period, all you need to do is read the news - the world is in complete chaos. In a way 2012 marks the beginning of a new age. During that year a galactical alignment is about to happen. The sun will rise in the centre of the milkyway which can result to a number of events. It's an event that has not happened during human history - ever. Anything is possible.

So I am returning to this subject again as I care about it alot and I hope more people would care about it. Though we see propaganda all around, twisted facts, fantasy land imagery in the movies, there is something real happening as well. Has been happening for a long time.

I myself stop frequently and ask: What would you do if it was the last day? And I ponder would I be good enough for heaven and content with how I have lived. Could I own up to my life or would I run away from it? Many people don't even care about these things and I respect their ways. But to those who do care, these things are real, To question ones final destination is never pointless. It's always good to ask big questions, they can lead up to big answers. And it's better to be safe than sorry.

Trilogy EP out now!

February 11th, 2010, "Trilogy" EP was released. It is an EP which contains three classical pieces including "Requiem for Aurora", "Recollections" and "Manifestation".

The "Trilogy" EP was conceived not according to any plan but it was simply born out of my needs and the circumstances. My grandmother's passing had a very strong effect on me emotionally and lots of things kept bubbling under my skin. Music became my way of getting it all out. In the process, three pieces were born, of which I am very proud and at the same time ashtonished that I actually did them. It is my first departure into classical music but I can assure you, it won't be my last. I find it very liberating to escape writing lyrics and singing occasionally. I enjoy the process of creating a mood through instrumental music alone.

"Requiem for Aurora" describes the journey to an unknown place, the sorrow of letting go as well as the point of no return. "Recollections" describes the many memories and events that our lives consists of. "Manifestation" finalizes the trilogy, describing the battle to come to the other side, the birth of a new beginning.

*"Trilogy" EP can be downloaded through Kimmo's Bandcamp page, click the widget on this page and you can listen, share and download the EP.

**Above the main covers as well as the individual covers for each track.

*** "Trilogy" EP is not the only release, look out for the full length digital albums coming out soon!

Requiem for Aurora

In the end of January 2010, my grandmother passed away. I wrote a song "Be Set Free" as she was laying in the hospital with no hope of returning to us. Last Saturday we said our goodbyes and laid her to the ground. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust... And I felt I was not yet finished living through all my emotions, that there were parts of me that still haven't quite realized what has happened. At times it seems like I'm drifting through a surreal fog. Letting go is never easy. Dying is the end of one chapter but it is also the beginning of another. Life on earth is simply a test we must pass.

The inspiration for "Requiem for Aurora" came to me from the second name of my grandmother: Aurora. The name is of Latin origin, meaning "dawn". It seemed to hold in the most precious thought, the salvation of a soul, it's journey from earth to the infinite light - and the composition wrote itself. I was just an instrument, as I always am. Music helps me deal with emotions of many sorts, and in this time of loss, it has helped me more than perhaps anything else. Rest in peace, Helvi Aurora - and above all, be with God.

Catch

I collaborated with Mizz Veronica from Norway for this particular track - and it turned out wonderful. I wrote, produced, performed and arranged the song and Mizz Veronica added the icing on the cake with her luscious vocals.

Willie Nelson's Peace Video Contest: A Peaceful Solution

Some time ago I took part in Willie Nelson's Peace Video Contest and did a version of a song by Amy and Willie Nelson ("A Peaceful Solution"). The cover has been on my You Tube channel for some time, so some of you may already be familiar with it. If you aren't, I hope you take a moment to listen to it.

I feel very honored to be able to contribute to this project and on my part spread the word of peace.

Willie Nelson Peace Reseach Institute does important work, so please check out their website, get familiar with different issues and listen to other artist's versions of "A Peaceful Solution" as well.

My cover version was just published on the website, here is a link which directs you to the article. I encourage you to visit the website and urge you to consider what peace and peaceful solutions mean to you. And also act upon what you come to realize.

If you want to take part in Willie Nelson's Peace Video Contest you can do so by covering this particular song or by creating a video to accompany any of the many available audios you can download from the site. Or if you aren't feeling up to it, you can always spread the message of peace through your own actions and be part of the peace revolution in your own very specific and meaningful way. Thank you.

** UPDATE: The video for my version of "A Peaceful Solution" has been taken off of my YT channel (mrhouse2007). However it will be re-uploaded to my new official YT channel (KimmoMusic), along with lots of original songs, past present and future.

Nature Boy's Tale

It's been a very long time since I have updated this blog. So many songs ago it's shameful.

I've also been away on holiday. It's always great to get out of the city for a week or two. As an urban person, there is no greater joy than to dig my fingers to the ground and do some gardening. You miss the connection with nature when you're surrounded by concrete.

It feels like home when I go to our house on the countryside, because once upon a time it was my actual home - before that my grandparent's home. Alot of history there. The house has been unoccupied since my mother moved out, so now it serves the purpose of a summerhouse. Because of several things that happened there I kept my distance for some years, barely visiting or spending time there. My current home is located few hundred kilometres away in Helsinki, so it's not often that I find myself there. But this year I've felt at peace with everything and I've already visited two three times. There is nothing better than to sit outside reading a book, when the nature is all around and the warm breeze passes over you. It's like a slice of heaven.

Though not always as I found out on my first trip. I was a bit too enthusiastic on the gardening part and like someone who's accustomed to city life, I did everything wrong. I managed to pull a muscle from my back and the pain was unbelievable. I wasn't able to sit for weeks which also partly explains why I haven't been updating much. I simply was not able to do anything, though against all reason I tried which only prolonged the process of healing.

Plea Agaist Domestic Violence

I know people who have been abused, physically, mentally, sexually. I have been a target of mental abuse. When I was younger my family life was painted with daily fear and colored with the evils of alcoholism, psychological abuse and violence. I know how it feels. I have not experienced all the horrors under the sky and I have not gone down the darkest of roads but I do know what it is to have that feeling, to fear each and every day for what it may bring, to be on your toes every minute so no one gets "upset". Too many times I stood between my parents pleading them to stop fighting. Too many times my tiny voice raised against my father. Too many times I saw my father hurt himself. One time too many I saw him grab my mother by the hair. Seven times too many I ran way with my mother, bags in our hands waiting for a bullet to hit us as we ran. Too many times I saw things get broken in my home. Too many times I saw my mother picking up the pieces, sobbing, while my father ordered her like a slave. Too many times my mother went back.

Here is just few real life scenarios from me that do not need to happen to you - and never should happen to anyone. I wanted to take my experience and write a song about an issue that is too common in our world. I wanted to portray different scenarios where violence takes place, at least scratch the surface of this very complex yet simple problem. Violence comes in various forms and the target changes from child to wife to husband to elderly person to everything under the sky. So does the degree and nature of the acts of violence. But the essence is always the same: It is always wrong and there are no excuses for it. Nothing justifies violence. No one has the right to make you suffer and if you have issues with yourself and your life, it doesn't give you the right to take it out on other people. This way you only continue the cycle and spread it like a disease.

If you have a history of violence, get help and deal with the real reasons behind your behavior. If you are in a violent relationship, get out of it - now! There are no excuses for staying, none. Don't victimize yourself. Don't hope the abuser changes and does it no more, that is a lose-lose thought. Without proper steps of rehabilitation things will never change and even in such hopeful case, it is far more likely that the problem gets worse than it is for it to go away. Even if you have somehow "contributed" to a fight predating the assault, it makes no difference. No matter what you did it still does not give anyone the right to hit you. You need to be brave and walk away from the situation and decide - yes, decide - you will not let anyone treat you this way. You are better than that.

If you have children and they are witnessing a chaotic atmosphere full of violence, substance abuse, mental abuse, any kind of abuse either directed at you or at them - take your children and run. Do not "stay for the kid's sake". The kid is far better off living with one parent who behaves in a healthy way than in a home full of damaging patterns to repeat in their own lives. And if they see you get beaten and disrespected and you do not leave, you are teaching them that such behavior is okay. They will take in the lesson and they will act it out. Do not inflict emotional and physical pain on your children by forcing them to grow up around violence and abusive behavior.

If you (and your kids) are experiencing violence in your own home, you need to call someone immediately. Open up to those who are closest to you. Don't be discouraged if they can't handle it, it is more than likely that you are much stronger than those who have not been exposed to such ugliness. Do not give up and fall back in because it is easier or because things would be "too hard". They are not, if you want to protect your life and your children's lives. Contact your local police station or any organization or community which guides and helps people with domestic violence issues. Help is out there, you just need to take the first step. And do not feel ashamed, you are not guilty of anything and there is nothing to be ashamed of in your situation. You have not "brought it upon yourself" even if your abuser says so. You do not deserve to be hit for any reason. You need to respect yourself and save yourself. Seek help before the damage is beyond repair. God be with you.

Sincerely,
Kimmo
